A man has assaulted a 16-year-old girl while she was walking near the summit of Mount Maunganui.

The assault happened at 1pm on Thursday, police say.

Police are appealing for witnesses and say the man is European, aged between 50 and 60 years old, is bald on top and greying at the sides. He is about 1.8m tall and is of medium build and has probably left the area in a vehicle.

He was wearing a navy blue t-shirt with white patches on it, and dark-coloured three-quarter shorts. He had sunglasses on.

The mountain, known as Mauao is a historic reserve owned by Maori and managed by Tauranga City Council.

It is popular with walkers. It takes about 40 minutes to walk to the summit, which is 232m high.
