NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 22/04/2016

A woman in her 70s who was rescued from a burning house in Whanganui has died in hospital.

Firefighters pulled the woman out of the house in Heads Road on Thursday night, says Fire Service central communications shift manager Mike Wanoa.

The report of a fire came from the house itself and the single-storey house was well ablaze when the first firefighters arrived, he said.

The woman was discovered inside and was taken outside where fire fighters performed CPR on her until medics arrived.

She was taken to Whanganui Hospital in a critical condition.

A hospital spokeswoman said the woman died in hospital and her death has been referred to the coroner.
