Police said 79-year-old Te Rauoriwa Daphne Pomana died in Wellington Hospital overnight from the injuries suffered in a head-on crash on State Highway 1 south of Paekakariki late on Sunday morning.

Her death takes the Labour Weekend holiday road toll to two.

The Levin woman was behind the wheel of one of the cars involved in the crash that forced the closure of the road for several hours.

The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and two other people were checked by paramedics but didn't need treatment.

Police are looking into the cause of the crash.

Earlier on Sunday, one person was killed after their car hit a median strip and then a truck on the Southern Motorway near Pokeno.
