A woman in her early 20s has drowned at Ninety Mile Beach in Northland on Wednesday.

Police received the report at 4pm that people were in distress in the water with emergency services responding immediately and locating three people.

They were able to rescue two children but could not save the woman.

Police are now notifying the next of kin and working to clarify the circumstances around the incident.
