Woman hit by car being chased by police

A woman has been hit by a car fleeing police in central Wellington.

The car hit the woman pedestrian about 1.55pm on Monday, a police spokesman says.

Police were following the car with two men and a woman in it after a theft from a retail premises in Lyall Bay at 1.40pm.

They signalled to it to stop but the driver continued into the city.

Police continued to attempt to pull the car over.

At the intersection of Everton Terrace and The Terrace the car went over a raised median island and struck the woman.

The woman has scrapes and bruises and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

The offenders are aged in their mid 20s and the car, a silver Mazda Familia, believed to be stolen, was abandoned in the Clifton Terrace carpark. The trio ran off.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
