A 40-year-old man faces a raft of charges for an alleged vicious attack on a woman jogger in Whangarei he abducted then dumped on a street.

The woman, aged in her early twenties, was jogging around the Hatea Loop at about 6.30am on Friday when she was dragged into a car and taken to an address and viciously assaulted, police say.

She was dumped on a street in central Whangarei just before 7.30am where a member of the public found her and called emergency services.

She was taken to hospital where she is in a serious but stable condition.

The local man was arrested later in the day.

He will appear in the Whangarei District Court on Saturday charged with abduction, sexual violation and wounding with intent to injure.

Shortly before 1pm police stopped a car matching the description the woman gave.

The driver was taken back to the Whangarei Police Station and the car was seized for forensic examination.

A house in Whangarei will also undergo a forensic scene examination on Saturday.

"This is a terrible crime and our thoughts are tonight with the victim," says Inspector Justin Rogers, the area commander of Northland police.

Police are not looking for anyone else but they want anyone who saw a blue Nissan Serena people-mover with tinted windows and silver trim below the door line in the Whangarei area, particularly around the Hatea Loop area, in the days leading up to this attack.
