Woman passenger died in campervan crash

The person who died after a campervan and a station wagon crashed at Otaraia near Gore on Friday was a passenger in the campervan.

The 52-year-old woman from the North Island died at the scene, police said on Saturday.

The 42-year-old woman driving the white Apollo Toyota Hiace campervan was discharged from Southland Hospital on Saturday afternoon. She was also from the North Island.

A 78-year-old Southland man who was driving the late model gold-coloured Peugeot station wagon remains in a stable condition in Dunedin Hospital. He was the sole occupant of the car.

The accident happened at the intersection of Andrews Road and Old Coach Road at 4.30pm on Friday.

Police are asking witnesses to come forward.
