Woman swept out to sea dies on West Coast

A woman who was walking on the beach has died after she was swept out to sea by a rogue wave, north of Karamea on the West Coast.

Two helicopters, and a search and rescued team were deployed, and recovered the woman's body from the sea at 5.30pm on Sunday.

The 70-year-old was walking on the beach near the mouth of the Kohaihai River around 3:30pm when she and her partner were hit by a large wave.

The woman's partner was unable to save her.
