Woman's body by river a homicide, police

The discovery of a woman's body on the banks of the Rakaia River following a number of fires in the area is believed to have been a homicide.

Her body was removed from the banks near State Highway 1 on Monday after it was spotted by a member of the public as they were driving past the day before.

Police believe her death is linked to a series of fires in the area and say it is a homicide investigation.

Forensic teams have remained at Main Rakaia Road, where the body was found, to continue examining the scene.

It is expected that the road will be closed for several days.

A post-mortem on the woman's body will take place on Tuesday and police are yet to identify the victim.

Firefighters fought several fires in the bed of the Selwyn River just north of Dunsandel on Sunday afternoon.

Police said a 4WD was seen in the riverbed near to where the fires were first noticed.
