Prolific Leeds United striker Chris Wood is in a three-man race to be named player of the year in the English Championship.

The second-tier league's leading scorer with 24 goals, New Zealand striker Wood is nominated alongside Newcastle United front man Dwight Gayle and Brighton winger Anthony Knockaert.

Injury-prone Gayle has scored 21 goals in 28 games for the league leaders while Frenchman Knockaert, a former team-mate of Wood at Leicester City, has bagged 13.

The awards will be presented in London on April 9.

Wood was All Whites captain and scored from the penalty spot in their 2-0 win over Fiji in a World Cup qualifying match in Lautoka on Saturday, giving him 19 goals from 47 internationals.

The 25-year-old has been linked with interest from English Premier League clubs.

A report this week speculated Everton are prepared to pay STG14.6 million (NZ$26m) for Wood if Leeds United aren't promoted to the Premier League.

There are still eight rounds remaining in the Championship, with fourth-placed Leeds looking set to be involved in the promotion play-offs for teams ranked third to sixth.

One of those teams will compete in next season's top flight.
