Work has started on a $30 million city centre school in Christchurch which is a merger of two schools that have been operating on separate sites.

The Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery School brings together Discovery One and Unlimited Paenga Tawhiti.

Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye was at the St Asaph Street site on Thursday.

"The school's vision is based on students directing their own learning, and family-like relationships between the school and parents, whanau and the wider community," she said.

Construction will take about two years.

The project is part of the $1.1 billion Christchurch school rebuild programme which involves 115 schools rebuilt or renewed by 2022.
