Work has started on the $79 million redevelopment of Auckland's Western Springs College, which Education Minister Hekia Parata says is the largest-ever investment in a New Zealand school.

At least 80 per cent of the college's teaching areas will be replaced entirely and other facilities will be upgraded.

"The college is built on a former landfill and quarry, which means there are considerable geotechnical challenges associated with the site," Ms Parata said on Friday.

"However, it is ideally positioned to serve surrounding communities so this is an important investment in the local school network."

The college, with a roll of about 1300 students, is one of the country's highest-performing schools.
