Works starts on new international cable

Amy Adams © AAP Image/Lukas Coch Amy Adams Work has started on a new communications cable that will speed up data transfer between New Zealand, Australia and the United States.

The 14,000km cable starts in New Zealand at Mangawhai and will link to Sydney and then to Hawaii.

Communications Minister Amy Adams says the cable will carry 30 terabits of data a second, five times current capacity.

New Zealand's share of the cost is $65 million and the cable is due to be up and running by mid-2018.
