The World of WearableArt has revealed Weta Workshop has made a character for this year's show voiced by Jemaine Clement.

The WOW show, New Zealand's largest theatrical event, attracts about 58,000 people to Wellington for a three-week season that starts next Thursday.

Weta Workshop has long been a sponsor of the event that showcases art in the form of garments in a competition and extravagant show.

"For the very first time our support will extend into the show itself," chief executive and co-founder Richard Taylor says in a video released on social media.

"With the help of the wonderful Jemaine Clement we've created a fun and furry centre-piece for the stage," he said.

Clement, from the famed Flight of the Conchords comedy duo, will voice a beastly but impish creature who is a link through the show, the Dominion Post reports.

The Australian store David Jones has naming rights for the Avant Garde section of the show.

It got involved after opening a store in Wellington this year.

To celebrate the partnership, David Jones will display a garment created by late designer Claire Prebble in one of its Lambton Quay windows from September 20 to October 9.
