WOW winner's 'unintentional' likeness

A World of Wearable Art category winner has withdrawn her entry after reportedly becoming aware afterwards it was similar to someone else's design.

Auckland-based Bernise Milliken's Grandeer outfit won the sustainability award at the September event but organisers confirmed it has since been withdrawn.

The award has now gone to second place-getter, Hawaii's Christina Uebelein for her Bravada Cycling.

Milliken's Grandeer used doilies, tea towels and beads and was embellished with New Zealand birds and plants.

However, after her win she was sent a photo of a similar design. "I was shocked... it was unintentional," she told Fairfax Media. She didn't reveal where the other design came from.

WOW chief executive Gisella Carr says all WOW designers must attest to the originality of their work and cite any influences.

Milliken would be able to enter the competition again if she wished, she said.
