Three of five small yachts on Wellington Harbour have been capsized after a southerly blast ripped across the capital.

The police launch Lady Elizabeth IV was called out to help the 10 sailors in Evans Bay, believed to be part of an organised sailing party, just after midday on Monday.

"The good news is that everyone is accounted for," a police spokesman said.

A number of the sailors spent about 10 minutes in the water but all were wearing lifejackets and wetsuits.

The MetService says the wind was measured gusting up to 74km/h at Wellington Airport when the southerly came through.

A boat shadowing the yachts also helped with the rescue and the yachts were later towed to shore.
