NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 10/08/2016

Allegations insurance company Youi tried to mislead customers into buying insurance when they only wanted a quote has landed the company in court.

The New Zealand subsidiary of the South African company is facing 15 charges linked to claims it used misleading sales techniques between July 2014 and February this year.

Youi intends to plead guilty to the charges, according to the New Zealand Commerce Commission, which has filed the charges in Auckland District Court.

The allegations include that Youi misled customers into believing their bank or credit card details were required to generate a policy.

Customers were also allegedly sent invoices for unsolicited insurance policies, letters demanding payment for unsolicited policies, or debited bank or credit card accounts without customers' express permission or knowledge.

The commission said Youi had cooperated with its investigation but did not say when the case would be in court.
