Young cyclist steals senior limelight

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 24/04/2016

Young Gisborne cyclist Callum Gordon stole the limelight at the national club road championships, winning both the under-23 and senior elite race in Alexandra.

Gordon not only took out the under-23 honours, but proved too strong for all riders to claim the overall honours in the combined 140km race with the senior cyclists.

Gordon took the under-23 title over seven laps in 3hr 43min 57sec, two minutes faster than senior winner Tim Rush's 3:46.25.

It capped an excellent week for Rush, who also finished third in the time trial.

North Harbour's Georgia Williams took out the women's 80km race, competing as part of Cycling New Zealand's high performance endurance track squad preparing for the Rio Olympics.

Teammate and national elite champion Rushlee Buchanan pushed clear but Williams took charge mid-race, and won in 2:20.38, fractionally ahead of triathlete Amelia Watkinson (Hawke's Bay) in a sprint finish.
