Young woman dies in Rotorua crash

NZ NewswireNZ Newswire 6/08/2016

A young woman who sped off when police ordered her to stop has died after the car she was driving crashed into a stream in Rotorua.

Police say the crash happened about midnight on Saturday and three passengers in the vehicle were treated for minor injuries.

Inspector Bruce Horne said that shortly before the crash police had seen the car being driven through an intersection erratically and at speed.

He said they tried to stop the car but the driver sped off.

Not long after, the driver failed to take a moderate bend and the car became airborne, going over the bank of a stream and crashing into a berm on the other side.

Insp Horne said the woman died at the scene.

"This incident highlights the risk of driving at speed and the tragic consequences that can result when a driver refuses to stop and instead chooses to evade the police," he said.

The crash will be investigated by police and the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
