A teenage male has been arrested and faces multiple charges relating to the unlawful taking of vehicles in Palmerston North.

Police say the arrest of the 16-year-old comes after a series of thefts involving early model Subarus.

Senior Sergeant Steve Crawford says officers made extensive inquiries into the incidents, including examining security camera footage.

He says the case is a timely reminder for people to report any suspicious activity to police.

There are also basic prevention measure that vehicle users can take, including not leaving valuables inside.

Sen Sgt Crawford says it can take as little as five seconds for an offender to smash a window and grab an item.

He says the cost of repairing the window is often greater than the value of the item taken, which might be just spare change visible from outside.
