Youth charged over Hamilton taxi assault

Police car © SNPA Police car A 16-year-old male has been charged with repeatedly punching a Hamilton taxi driver in the head.

The youth attacked the driver at about 9pm last Saturday near a BP petrol station on Victoria Street in the city's central district, police say.

The driver was repeatedly punched around the head area and is now recovering from his injuries, Detective Sergeant Terri Wilson said.

"Assaults on taxi drivers are unacceptable - they are at their most vulnerable working alone at night," he said.

The 16-year-old was due to appear in the Hamilton Youth Court on Thursday afternoon on charges of assault with intent to rob and injuring with intent to injure.
