Black Caps quick Trent Boult is expecting Zimbabwe to put forward a better showing in Saturday's second Test match in Bulawayo.

The Kiwis thrashed Zimbabwe by an innings and 117 runs in the first Test, with Ross Taylor scoring an unbeaten 173 in New Zealand's 6-576.

Boult, 27, expected Zimbabwe to provide firmer resistance in the second Test.

"They'll be eager to prove a point and put a better step forward, in a way," Boult said.

"We know we're going to have it cut out for us."

The Black Caps head off for a retreat at the farm of former Zimbabwe paceman Heath Streak on Wednesday as several players seek to recover from a bout of flu.

Boult said he, fellow bowlers Neil Wagner and Tim Southee and keeper BJ Watling were among the worst affected.
