Southern white rhinoceros

On March 7, 2017, a four-year-old white rhinoceros was killed by poachers for its horn at Thoiry zoo in France. According to CeCe Sieffert, the deputy director of the International Rhino Foundation, this was the first known poaching incident of a rhino inside a zoo. The rhinoceros, named Vince (pictured), belonged to a subspecies of southern white rhinoceros that is considered “extremely threatened.” An estimated 21,000 of them remain in the wild across the world, mainly in South Africa and Uganda.
