Govt scraps most contentious RMA changes

Environment Minister Nick Smith announced on Thursday that the government was introducing a bill to parliament to make long-promised changes to New Zealand's planning and resource management laws. "The bill is a compromise," Dr Smith told reporters. Proposed amendments to sections six and seven of the RMA dealing with its purpose and principles, which critics were worried would water down environmental protections, have been scrapped.
