The godfather of an infamous New York crime family has been shot dead outside his home.

Frank Cali was shot up to six times before being run over, according to US media reports.

Cali, 53, was rushed to hospital from his home in Staten Island, but was later declared dead.

The mobster, who took over the family in 2015, is believed to be the first New York Mafia godfather to have been murdered since 1985.

No-one has been arrested and police are now hunting for the killer, who is believed to have fled in a blue pick-up truck.

Cali reportedly had just one criminal conviction on his record for extortion in 2008.  He served 10 months in jail.

The Gambino crime family has been active since the early 1900s with activities including racketeering, extortion, fraud, gambling, money laundering, murder, robbery and drug trafficking.
