Mass casualties have been reported in an attempted prison break at a US jail.

Several employees have reportedly been injured in the incident which has taken place at Pasquotank Correctional Facility, North Carolina.

A fire was allegedly set inside the prison's sewing plant during the attempted escape today, in order to distract guards.

One officer was struck with a hammer and three others have been taken to hospital, sputniknews reports.

People are being told to avoid the area, with some schools nearby on lockdown, according to reports.

Students journeying home will be sent back to schools until they hear back from the emergency services and parents will be updated, wavy.com reports.

Sharing a photo of the scene on Facebook, Amber Stickle said: "Prison is packed with cops and ambulances. Hope everyone is okay."
