Kiwi sailor Phil Robertson has claimed the inaugural M32 world championships as part of his China One Ningbo team in Sweden.

In a tournament specifically for the lightweight 32-foot catamaran class, Robertson was guaranteed victory after poor conditions forced Sunday's final day of racing in Marstrand (local time) to be cancelled.

He had previously earned a nine-point lead over Danish sailor Jonas Warrer, with compatriot Chris Steele a further three points back in third.

"You're dictated to by nature and I think that's the beauty of the sport - you've got to take whatever comes," Robertson said.

"It would have been nice to go out there and seal the deal on the racecourse, but I guess Mother Nature did it for us."

Robertson is currently ranked as the second-best match racing sailor in the world, behind Australian counterpart Sam Gilmour.
