The world No.1 dispatched Jeremy Chardy with ease on Tuesday and was back on court to take on Melzer just 24 hours later in Doha.

But the Austrian provided a much sterner test, taking Murray to a tie-break in the first set, before he eventually progressed 7-6, 7-5.

The first set lated a staggering 78 minutes before the Scot eventually took it with his ninth set point.

He got the crucial break in the second to go 6-5 up before comfortably serving for the match to secure his 26th straight win.

Murray will now enter the last eight and will be hopeful of landing his first tournament win of 2017 ahead of the Australian Open.
