The winners of the 2017 Auckland Nines could potentially claim $1 million in prize money if they pull off a rare double and win the NRL premiership in the same year.

The tournament's organisers, Duco Events, previously pitched the idea last year to the NRL and were rejected due to a lack of organisingtime, but they have re-entereddiscussions to offer the winner a seven figure sum.

It will be a massive incentive for clubs who only recieve $400,000 for winning the premiership and a mere $100,000 for the minor premiership.

The Auckland Nines tournament currently offers $2.3 million in total prize money, with the winner taking home $370,000.

If clubs were to pull off the trifecta they could earn around $1.9 million in one season's work, although it is yet to be achieved.

With much more money on the table teams may step away fromsending a half strength side to Auckland, and we could see an influx of stars flying over the Tasman to take part.
