Chelsea were involved in a marathon penalty shoot-out against Oxford in the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday evening.

Each side took 17 penalties before a Chelsea Under-21 side featuring Kurt Zouma and Marco Van Ginkel won 13-12.

Oxford had four penalties to win, but missed them all, while Zouma played the full 90 minutes as he continues his return from injury.

Despite the result, Chelsea take just a point from the 1-1 draw and finish bottom of Southern Group C, while Oxford finish second and progress to the next round.

Swindon topped the group with seven points after also drawing 1-1 with Exeter and winning on penalties.

In Northern Group A, Cheltenham finished top of the group following their 1-0 win over Bolton while a point from a 1-1 stalemate with Everton was enough to see Blackpool finish second.

Wolves and Chesterfield advanced from Northern Group B after beating Accrington Stanley and Crewe respectively.

Stoke fielded Bojan Krkic, Marc Muniesa, Peter Crouch and Giannelli Imbula against Bury but still only won on penalties after a 1-1 draw, meaning they will finish bottom of Northern Group C.

In Northern Group D, Oldham won on penalties against Blackburn after a 2-2 tie. Fleetwood will go through with Carlisle if they beat them on Wednesday.

Mansfield secured second place in Northern Group E after winning 3-2 at Derby while Doncaster topped the group after a goalless draw with Port Vale, who won on penalties.

Scunthorpe made it three wins from three with a 2-0 win at Cambridge, who finish second in Northern Group G after Middlesbrough lost 3-0 at home to Shrewsbury.

Walsall also recorded their third straight victory in Northern Group H, beating Leicester 1-0.

Both teams still advance to the next round.

In Southern Group A, Portsmouth finished third despite beating Bristol Rovers 1-0, with Reading and Yeovil set to battle it out for the top two places on Wednesday.

AFC Wimbledon topped Southern Group B despite losing 2-0 to Newport, while Swansea claimed second spot after beating Plymouth 2-0.

Wycombe and Coventry will meet on Wednesday already secured of the top two places in Southern Group D after Northampton and West Ham drew 1-1, with the Hammers winning on penalties.

It's a similar story in Southern Group E after Colchester beat Charlton on penalties following a 1-1 draw, with the top two Southampton and Crawley meeting on Wednesday.

Norwich continued their brilliant form in the competition by beating second-place MK Dons 4-1, taking their goals scored in three games to 15. The other game in Southern Group F saw Peterborough beat Barnet 2-1.

Southend topped Southern Group G despite losing 4-0 to Stevenage while Brighton took second with a 1-0 win over Leyton Orient.

In Southern Group H, Millwall finished first with their third straight win, 3-1 at Luton, who take second after West Brom lost 2-0 at home to Gillingham.
