© Provided by Sportal com au Manly halfback Daly Cherry-Evans was very surprised when he was given one of the club's greatest honours and captain the side.

The former Maroon said there were plenty of other contenders that he thought could have done the job.

''I felt as though there was that many options to replace Jamie Lyon,'' he said.

''I understood I would have been in contention, but to get it, was definitely a big surprise, purely based on the amount of good leaders we have at the club at the moment.

''It's an opportunity for me to show my leadership skills and it's something I'm definitely extremely excited and proud to have next to my name.

''They're big shoes to fill, what Jamie Lyon has left, but at the end of the day if I'm not having a crack, then I'm not doing my job for the team.

''It's a little bit reassuring with the C next to your name that your voice does carry far throughout the playing group.''

The inspirational Jake Trbojevic was heavily back for the captaincy ranks, however, the club opted for the more experienced playmaker.
