An agreement was reportedly being held up by the UFC, to whom McGregor is signed, but boss Dana White has now apparently thrown his weight behind the showdown.

He said: “I think it’s going to be a tough deal, because obviously [there are] a lot of egos involved in this deal and a lot of people, so that always makes it tougher.

“On the flip side, there’s so much money involved I just don’t see how it doesn’t happen.

“Conor McGregor is huge. He’s 28 years old. He’s in the prime of his career. Floyd is 40.

“Floyd has always had a problem with southpaws. Conor is a southpaw and Conor hits hard.”

McGregor, despite crossing over from his more natural habitat of the octagon to the squared circle, insists he can cause an upset an inflict the first defeat of Mayweather's perfect 49-0 career.

“Trust me, I will stop Floyd," said the Irishman. "You’re all going to eat your words. The whole world will eat their words.

“Watch me take over boxing. Trust me on that. No-one in this boxing game knows what it coming.”
