The Cronulla Sharks have received a blow with their request to host their home semi-final at Southern Cross Group Stadium denied.

Sharks CEO Lyall Gorman met with NRL officials at League Central on Monday morning and was informed that should his club finish the season in the top two, Cronulla's 'home' semi-final would take place at either Allianz Stadium or ANZ Stadium.

Coach Shane Flanagan confirmed that Sharks officials had met with NRL administrators following Cronulla's victory over the Knights on Sunday, in an attempt to have the NRL divert from its current policy of utilising the two venues big venues in favour of traditional grounds.

Given the current formation of the top eight, it is likely the Sharks would play the Raiders or Broncos in the first week of the finals.

With both teams located outside of Sydney, a huge crowd would not be expected, and a large yet empty and soulless stadium would not be a good look for the NRL.
