St George Illawarra have abandoned plans to recruit bad boy Todd Carney due to fears the NRL would not register the contract, according to reports.

Carney was sacked by Cronulla after his infamous ‘bubbler’ photo in 2014.

He is without a club after splitting with Super League club Catalans, despite having two years left on his contract with the French club.

The Daily Telegraph is reporting the Dragons were interested in signing 30-year-old Carney as a replacement for Benji Marshall.

But inquiries with the NRL quickly put an end to their pursuit of the former Dally M medalist.

The Dragons will now look within their own ranks for Marshall’s replacement.

Young gun Drew Hutchinson is likely to start next season in the halves with Englishman Gareth Widdop.

Kurt Mann and Josh McCrone are the other options for the Red V.
