The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the hearing for Faf du Plessis' appeal against a ball-tampering charge will take place on December 19.

South Africa's stand-in Test captain was found guilty of breaching Article 2.2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct after footage emerged of him applying saliva from a mint or sweet to the ball during a victory over Australia in the second Test in Hobart.

Du Plessis said he felt world cricket's governing body may have made him a scapegoat and opted to exercise his right to challenge the verdict.

The 32-year-old batsman, who made a century in the third Test in Adelaide after he was cleared to play, will not be present for his hearing in Dubai this month, but will join the proceedings via telephone.

English barrister Michael Beloff QC has been appointed as the judicial commissioner to hear the appeal.
