The 25-year-old New Zealand batsman averaged 63.66 in four Specsavers County Championship games and scored 139 runs in his five NatWest T20 Blast matches after joining the north-east county for the second part of the campaign.

Latham will miss Durham's final Division Two games of the season against promotion-chasing Worcestershire next week as he prepares for New Zealand's one-day and T20 series in India but is set to return to Chester-le-Street for the entire 2018 campaign.

Durham, who this week announced T20 captain Paul Coughlin will leave for Nottinghamshire next season, said: "The deal is subject to his New Zealand duties but should be concluded over the next few days."

Head coach Jon Lewis said: "Tom has made a fantastic contribution on and off the field during his time here at Durham. His performances with the bat have been excellent and he is a big influence in the dressing room.

"Myself and the players are delighted that he will be returning for the entire 2018 campaign."
