Mick Fanning has lost his bid for a fourth world title after Brazilian Adriano de Souza was crowned WSL champion with a win in the semi-finals of the Pipeline Masters.

De Souza claimed the title after beating local Mason Ho in the semi-finals of the event at North Shore in Hawaii.

He will meet compatriot Gabriel Medina, last year's champion, in the final later this morning.

Fanning, who's competing despite mourning the death of his older brother Peter, was defeated by Medina 11.33 to 10.36 in modest conditions in the first of the semi-finals.

Earlier, the grieving surfer kept his world title hopes alive after beating 11-time champion Kelly Slater 9.50 to 6.17 in the quarter-finals.

He completed the triumph with a 6.00 ride on his final wave of the round.

Medina, who's after the triple crown, was knocked out of the title race with Fanning's win over Slater.

Fanning learnt of the death of his brother Peter in Australia on Wednesday.
