Government urged to increase Newstart allowance

There are growing calls from both sides of politics for an increase in the Unemployment benefit. The Newstart allowance is worth about $275 a week or less than $40 a day, which business, industry and welfare groups argue is far too low. Liberal senator Dean Smith is the latest on the coalition side to call for the benefit to be boosted. On the other side, Labor's David Smith wants to see a $75 a week increase.
