Jared Payne is Ireland's bolter in Warren Gatland's 41 man Lions squad for this summer's series in New Zealand.

The Ulster star earned his surprise selection on the back of his performance at full-back against England in the 6 Nations finale at the Aviva Stadium.

Prior to that, the versatile New Zealand born back, a regular for Schmidt at centre, was recovering from a kidney injury he suffered in the November series.

Speaking to Ulster Rugby, Payne said: "It's a pretty big shock, you don't get too many shocks these days with things".

It's definitely something that's come out of the blue," he continued, "I'm hugely proud and over the moon but pretty surprised.

"I just texted my mum and dad and my partner and they're all over the moon, it hasn't sunk in yet.

"It's great for Ulster and to have a few friendly faces on the trip is good.

"Those two have worked bloody hard over the last two years aswell so it's great to see that recognised.
