Michael Phelps tried to tell Ryan Lochte to be careful during the Rio Olympics in July, but the latter clearly didn't heed Phelps'advice.

"I did have a talk with him about two days before about not doing anything bad," Phelps told The Associated Press on Tuesday ."I told him, 'Just keep your head on straight. Have fun.'"

Lochte then got into a drunken debacle at a Rio gas station after a night of partying, where he said he was robbed at gunpoint with swimming teammatesGunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen.

Lochte was later charged with filing a false police report. He was banned from competition for 10 months, which means he won't be able to qualify for the world championships. He also had to return $100,000 in medal bonuses, won't be allowed to go with the team to the White House and has to perform20 hours of community service.

The other three swimmers are banned from competition for four months.
