NRL announces rule changes

A meeting of NRL coaches endorsed the move today.

Cleary will assist with match review, judiciary and refereeing issues and all matches will be reviewed by two MRC members, rather than one.

“Ivan is one of the most experienced coaches in the game and he has a great feel for what the clubs want from our match and judiciary officials,” said NRL CEO Todd Greenberg.

“So our coaches can now be assured that we are getting input from someone who has a real feel for the game from the coaching perspective.”

Coaches urged referees to make decisions on field rather than relying on the bunker for incidences of foul play. There were resolutions made this week, but their views will be considered at the next Competition Committee.

The meeting addressed obstruction rules, and endorsed the current system, which allows the referee to use discretion to determine whether defences have been impeded.

The only other recommendations concern extra-time during the finals series. A new proposal would see five minutes extra time played each way before the game goes to Golden Point.
