The Spaniards grabbed a goal just before full time.

The Black Sticks women now have two wins and a loss and remain in contention for the quarter-finals.

Their remaining pool matches are against world number one The Netherlands and China.

New Zealand cyclist Linda Villumsen missed out on a medal in the women's individual time trial in Rio.

The Danish-born rider battled wet conditions out on the road, placing sixth, 28 seconds off the pace.

The 31-year-old said she was sad about the result. "It was very hard today.

The roads on the downhills were very slick. I didn't want to take chances, and that cost me some time.

"Maybe my legs were tired from the road race. I didn't feel like I had good legs today," she said.

The American Kristin Armstrong landed herself her a third Olympic gold medal with a time of 44.26.42.

It is Villumsen's favoured event, she won gold last year at the UCI Road World Championships. - RNZ
