St Kilda midfielder Luke Dunstan has spent time in police lock-up after being detained for intoxication in a public place on Saturday morning.

The 21-year-old was found passed out by law enforcement officers while on a leave weekend from the Saints' New Zealand pre-season training camp.

Dunstan was kept in a cell for a few hours before being given on a fine on his release.

"Luke notified the club immediately of the situation and is extremely remorseful," St Kilda general manager Jamie Cox said.

"Luke’s a trusted young man of strong character and we’re disappointed he has not met club expectations on this occasion.

"This serves as a prescient reminder to our playing group of the importance of responsible consumption of alcohol."

St Kilda's leadership group will meet to discuss a possible punishment for Dunstan over the next week.
