Steve ‘Blocker’ Roach has launched a scathing attack on the Tigers, saying his old side needs a cleanout and that the signing of Jamal Idris is a bad move.

Wests signed Idris after the former Bulldogs, Titans and Panthers player took a year and a half off, but Roach says the game has gone past the 26-year-old.

“I hope they know what they’re doing,” Roach wrote in Rugby League Week.

“He hasn’t played for 18 months and was never a player to produce effort after effort.

“Sure, he has the size and body shape to make an impression. But he’ll be amazed at the added pace in the game since he last ran into touch.

Roach said the main concern at the Tigers seems to be their ‘Centre of Excellence’ but says there are other issues - including welfare problems and major re-signings -that need to be addressed.

“The only problem I’m aware of within my old club is that they’re yet to re-sign their four big guns,” he said.

“Wow. Now won’t that produce a player of quality? Yes, in about five years’ time, if they’re lucky. The club needs a senior management culling.”

Roach played 186 games for Balmain in the 1980s and ‘90s. He had a coaching role at the club but was let go alongside Paul Sironen amidst huge turmoil at Concord Oval two years ago.
