Wang, who ranks 102nd in the world, only needed an hour and 23 minutes to drop the 26th-ranked Stephens in two sets (6-3; 6-3).

What makes the upset more shocking is that it's been only eight days since Stephens won the ASB Classic in Melbourne over German Julia Goerges.

Stephens committed 36 unforced errors in the loss, compared to Wang's 21.

Elsewhere, No. 1 seed Serena Williams easily disposed of Camila Giorgi, and rising Russian starlet Margarita Gasparyan earned a mild upset win over 17-seed Sara Errani, defeating the Italian in three sets (1-6; 7-5; 6-1).
