Warriors chief executive Jim Doyle is confident he will lure Kieran Foran to the club for the 2017 NRL campaign.

The out-of-contract Kiwi star, who was released from a lucrative long-term deal with the Eels in July, has struggled with injury and personal problems in 2016.

The 26-year-old was also given time off before the termination of his Eels contract to attend a rehabilitation clinic.

Foran is reportedly close to signing a one-year deal with the New Zealand outfit and is understood to have toured the club's facilities a fortnight ago.

However Doyle denied on Tuesday that a deal was imminent, saying the club was yet to offer Foran a contract.

Talks were continuing between the two parties and were a work in progress. But Doyle, the ex-NRL chief operating officer, was confident the club would eventually get its man.

"I would say we're favourites but the favourite doesn't always win, so we'll have to keep working through it," Doyle said. "

We continue to talk to him on a regular basis." Foran's potential return to the game will have to be cleared by the league's integrity unit, who reportedly wish to investigate his close relationship with controversial punter Eddie Hayson.

An NRL spokesman told News Corp Australia that Foran would have to convince the league he is of fit and proper character.

The NRL would also check his mental state and ensure he is not implicated in NSW Police's match-fixing investigation before approving his contract.

Doyle also admitted Foran's acquisition would depend on the league not placing a high notional value on him.

He warned against making any presumptions about the five-eighth.

"It's just a cloud, you can't pre-judge anyone," Doyle said.

Doyle earlier told NewstalkZB that Foran would form a potent combination with star halfback Shaun Johnson if he crossed the Tasman. "He's a leader, he plays with a massive amount of passion and brings everyone along with him," he said.
