Former Parramatta and Manly forward Anthony Watmough has opened up on the circumstances surrounding Kieran Foran’s dramatic exit from the Eels and the NRL on Friday.

Watmough fronted the cameras, and spoke to Fox Sports about the circumstances surrounding Foran’s exit from the game, after the pair shared time together as teammates at both the Sea Eagles and Eels.

“He’s obviously a braver man than me and you,” Watmough told NRL Tonight

“He walked away from everything because he realised he’s got to get himself right.

"It takes a very brave man to step away to get himself right. From getting kicked and kicked and kicked every day … whether it was his private life or his career, every day going through what he was going through.

“And believe me, I know how low he was because I spoke to him and unless you’ve been around people with mental health issues or people with depression or things like that, you don’t know what they’re going through.

“He’s a hero in my eyes because he kept getting up every day and dealing with it and getting on with life.

“Whether it was guys behind desks writing stories about him or people with microphones, it was pretty relentless on him and I felt for the kid, and he realised he had to get away.”

Foran released a statement on Friday night stating that he would be taking an indefinite break from the game to deal with a number of personal issues.
