The Phoenix sit just one spot outside the top six after a dour home win on Saturday evening, with McGlinchey's ninth-minute goal the difference.

The midfielder received a ball on the left flank from Roly Bonevacia, turned inside and then rifled a shot past Storm Roux and the outstretched hands of a diving Paul Izzo.

McGlinchey started his A-League career on the Central Coast in 2009, before heading to Wellington in 2014.

The Mariners were probably unlucky not to concede again as Wellington dominated in front of goal.

The hosts finished with seven on-target shots to Central Coast's one despite having considerably less ball on the night.
