India have left out a big name in their World Cup squad, with veteran Dinesh Karthik beating Rishabh Pant to the second wicketkeeper's spot.

Most players had picked themselves, but like Australia, questions remained over the worth of picking a second 'keeping option.

Australia didn't, with Peter Handscomb missing out - but India opted for the older, more-experienced Karthik over Pant.

Chief selector M.S.K Prasad announced a 15-member squad, to be led by Virat Kohli, on Monday.

World Cup-winning skipper MS Dhoni remains the obvious first-choice wicketkeeper, and selectors also preferred the old head of "finisher" Karthik's versus 21-year-old Pant's fireworks.

"We felt Rishabh Pant or DK will come into the playing XI only if [Dhoni] is injured," Prasad told reporters.

"In crunch matches, who can be the best guy who can handle the pressure? For that reason, the decision went in favour of Dinesh Karthik.

"Otherwise Pant is full of talent, there'll be time for him. It's unfortunate for him that he missed out."

Prasad also touched on the selection of the "three dimensional" all-rounder Vijay Shankar, with veteran Ambati Rayudu missing the cut.

"Apart from his batting, he can bowl and he's a fantastic fielder," Prasad said of Shankar.

"We are looking at him as number four. We have Dinesh Karthik and Kedar Jadhav also, so we have plenty of options at number four right now."

India's World Cup quest gets underway on 5 June against South Africa in Southampton.
