All Blacks hooker Dane Coles will make his long-awaited return to first-class rugby, after he was named on the bench for Wellington's Mitre 10 Cup clash with Taranaki on Friday night.

Coles, 31, last took the field for the national team against France last November, scoring a try, before he was taken from the field with torn Knee ligaments. It was only his 11th game of the year, as he dealt with injuries and concussion.

He missed the entire 2018 Super Rugby season for the Hurricanes, but has been part of the All Blacks wider squad, without actually taking the field against France or the just-completed Rugby Championship.

He will wear the number 16 jersey, backing up promising Asafo Aumua.

All Blacks flanker Vaea Fifita will also return to the Wellington starting line-up. The forward utility was called into the national squad for its recent Argentina trip, after captain Kieran Read was rested.

Wellington are desperate for victory over Taranaki, the bottom-placed premiership side.

They are currently tied with North Harbour for the fourth and final playoff spot - Harbour face frontrunners Auckland in the penultimate game of the regular season.
